Indian Motorcycle® Sweeps American Flat Track Atlanta Podium

Indian Motorcycle® Racing continues its remarkable return to American Flat Track, as Jared Mees, Brad Baker and Bryan Smith sweep the podium at the Atlanta Short Track with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishes, respectively. Mees and Smith earned their second trip to the podium in as many weeks, as the two finished 1st and 2nd, respectively, at the Daytona TT season opener.

In what has already been a historic return to flat track racing, Indian Motorcycle® tallied five of six podiums to start the 2017 American Flat Track season, following the sweep in Woodstock, GA. Equipped with the Scout FTR750, Indian’s® “Wrecking Crew,” is living up to its legendary nickname that pays homage to Indian’s® race team from the sport’s early days.

“To follow up last week’s win with such a dramatic finish, and have my fellow Indian® teammates on the podium with me is an incredible feeling,” said Mees. “The team did an outstanding job preparing the Scout FTR750 for this track, and I rode as hard as I could until the very end. It’s an unbelievable start to a long season, and we’re excited to keep it rolling.”

Mees ran second for the majority of the race, stalking #69 Sammy Halbert and waiting for the right time to make a move. With six laps remaining, Mees dove inside of Halbert to move into first. But Halbert would not be easily denied, and the two veteran riders began a heated battle, diving inside of each other to exchange first and second positions. The battle ended with the two making contact, sending Halbert sliding into the wall and forcing a late red flag. From the restart, the final five laps seemed merely a formality with the Wrecking Crew running first, second and third to a historic finish.

Mees also achieved a personal milestone, scoring his first AFT Short Track victory to complete the elusive dirt track Grand Slam. By winning a mile, half mile, short track, and TT Mees joined exclusive company in the annals of flat track racing. Opening the year with a victory at the DAYTONA TT – his first TT triumph – Mees is now halfway to earning a dirt track Grand Slam in consecutive races, something that has never been done in the 64-year history of the sport.

“It’s for moments like this we reintroduced Indian Motorcycle® back to flat track racing,” said Gary Gray, Product Director for Indian Motorcycle®. “We’re extremely proud of the team and thankful for all the preparation and execution, but it’s a long season and there’s plenty more racing.”

The other motorcycle to benefit from the new Indian Motorcycle® Ride Command system is the Indian Chieftain (top) and his matte black brother, the Indian Chieftain Dark Horse. Designed for those who want a serious touring machine, but do not require the storage of a full dresser, the Chieftain goes without a top box and an abbreviated windshield, while the Dark Horse has just a solo seat for the ultimate in touring attitude. Most of the Roadmaster’s features are there, so you can tour bagger-style to your heart’s content. You can get the Chieftain in three solid colors, and your choice of two two-tone paint schemes, with the 2017 Indian® Chieftain’s price starting at $23,999 MSRP. As you’d expect, the 2017 Indian Chieftain Dark Horse comes in one color, with a base price of $21,999.

The two bikes in the Indian® Cruiser line are closely related, with color and attitude separating them. Sans bags, wind protection and sporting a defiant solo seat, the 2017 Indian® Chief Classic and Chief Dark Horse are stripped down cruisers that still have plenty of features. Most importantly, the 2017 Indian® Chief Classic and Chief Dark Horse get the big Thunder Stroke 111 motor, and the long-stroke air-cooled engine is pushing a bike that weighs just 751 pounds (claimed dry). Available in two two-tone color combinations, the starting price of th®e 2017 Indian Chief Classic is $18,499 MSRP, while the matte-black only 2017 Indian Chief Dark Horse can be had for a MSRP of $17,499.

2017 Indian® Scout and Scout Sixty

Although these little hotrods are the least expensive motorcycles in the Indian® lineup, the 2017 Indian® Scout and smaller-displacement Scout Sixty are hardly entry-level machines. The Indian® Scout uses a 69 cubic inch liquid-cooled powerplant that puts out 100 horsepower through a six-speed gearbox and loves to rev. Utilizing the same chassis, the Scout Sixty’s motor is 60 cubic inches, and gets by with a five-speed transmission. Given its sweet nature, some people prefer the $8999 ($9999 with ABS) Scout Sixty over the full-power $11,299 Scout (add $1k for ABS, again). The 2017 Indian® Scout non-ABS version comes in three colors, while the Scout ABS is available in Burgundy Metallic and a choice of two two-tone color combinations. The 2017 Indian® Scout Sixty ABS is only available in Indian Motorcycle® Red (shown), which the non-ABS version can be had in Thunder Black, as well as Pearl White.
